Josh Schwartz Answers A Final Few Questions
Published February 22nd, 2007 in General OC News.
Although his mind may have been occupied by the pending finale of “The O.C.,” Josh Schwartz was willing to hop into the Wayback Machine to reflect on his show’s four season run.
What were some of his favorite episodes?
“The pilot, just because I wrote it in my boxer shorts and I had no idea what would come of it and there was just that purity to it,” Schwartz responds quickly.
He continues, “The Tijuana episode, episode seven, because for me it summarized the spirit of the show, that it could be funny and real and also operatically tragic. You had a Luke and Holly Jager-shot grind-out on the dancer floor, a club-wide brawl, a ‘Sure Thing’-style road trip sequence, Ryan and Marissa fighting over Ding-Dongs and cheese sticks at the vending machine at the dive motel, Seth and Summer realizing they hate each other but they’re an old married couple and then you had Marissa’s O.D. It encapsulated the spirit of the show and hit all the notes.”
He also salutes “The Rainy Day Women” from season two and “The Summer Bummer” from season four, as well as show’s various episodes celebrating Thanksgivings, Easters and, of course, Chrismukkah.
“I always loved our holiday episodes. I think we did holidays really well. We didn’t get to Sukkoth, which is a great regret of mine, or Yom Kippur, but who wants to watch people atone for an hour?”
Asked for least favorite episodes or story arcs, he’s a bit more pragmatic.
“There are no episodes where we leaned too much on the comedy that I really regret, but there are some maybe the melodrama overtook the show,” he hedges. “There’s certainly the Johnny run from season three. That’s probably the one I’d like to have back.”
And what important lessons has he learned since beginning his run as an inexperienced twentysomething network showrunner?
“We had a great extended cast of characters and lot of those people we let go and tried bring in newer characters and tried to keep the world fresh and turning, and I think there was a lot of potential to be tapped in some of those characters that left the show early. I’m thinking of Anna and Luke and Haley and Jimmy and Caleb, though Caleb had a good run.”
Were there any storylines that Schwartz wished they’d been able to pursue?
“There’s very little, story-wise, that I think we left untapped,” he says, after a couple seconds thought. “The thing we never did was mix and match our couples. You never saw Seth end up with Marissa and Ryan’s dating Anna while Summer’s with Luke. We never went that version. I think it would have been interesting. That ties in with my earlier point that if you have a canvas of characters that people are really responding to, you keep them around and figure it out.”
With two pilots — The CW’s “Gossip Girls” and NBC’s “Chuck” — in the mix this spring, what has Schwartz learned about dealing with networks?
“That if you don’t believe in something, say ‘No,’ because if you do something they ask you to do and it doesn’t work, they don’t really remember that they asked you,” he says. “Just try to make the best show possible and not worry about the other stuff — the numbers, the ratings, the other stuff — but that’s not gonna make a good show.”

What ever happened with Teresa? Was it Ryan’s baby or not?
UP YOURS SCHWARTS FOX SUCKS WHAT A BAD ENDING MY THE SCHWARTZ BE WITH YOU
i wonder wat Josh Schwartz has instore for a new show!!…..i know it will be a good one!!!
AM ALSO CURIOUS ABOUT TERESA AND THA BABY!!
that was a gay ending…
joshh please dont do another show you screwed it up
If you go back and watch one of the last epsiodes in Season 3, it has basically a whole episode about the baby. It ended up being Eddie’s baby, I think it was the prom episode or somewhere around there in Season 3.
ITS WASNT HIS KID THEY BARLEY WENT OVER THAT IN THE SHOW IF U WERE TALKING OR SOMETHING U WOULD MISS IT, TERESA SAID SHE HAD A BOYFRIEND AND HE WAS THE FATHER GOPHERSBOY26@AOL.COM
I enjoyed the episode, i wish there would have been a cast farewell afterwards!..or better yet an encore season!
uum i cant believe you killed the show off josh you suck! i am so sad! like i cryed forever! the oc was the best show you should have let the cw pick it up you dumbass
This was a great seanson, and nice to see The O.C end up happy for a change. There should of been something with Taylor and Ryan at leat we could of seen an engagment ring or something, but I have one question what is Ryan’s little brother’s name.I didnt hear it or was busy getting more tissues.lol I also thing the could of brought jimmy, Anna, and Haley back for just the finally. You could of fit them in there.Josh I cant wait until your next show make it a good one you will have me on board. Cant wait til this one comes out on DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually you’re wrong Travis why don’t you try and get your facts straight, the baby was Eddie’s
I am so sad that it all ended we really loved the characters so much. We thought it seemed like you were rushing the last episode like smooching too much into one but i guess you decided you were done and that was it! I wish there was going to be a next season. Id like to see summer and seth and their life and sandy win a few more for the good guys We always look forward to the next season!!!! I hope the next show you put out is as good but that would be hard to top.
Thanks for writting the show even though its ending I loved the ending and i realy hope that it keeps going and i promise i will watch it no matter what.
Megan is right Josh, this show will be hard to top. There is also another comment on the cast page about picking up with Ryan and the kid in the last scene that looked like Ryan. That was a very good scene and brought tears to probably 4 million viewer’s eyes. This just CAN’T be the end! The issue with Teresa’s son- although she did say it was Eddie’s, the boy was white, not hispanic, and was a spitting image of Ryan. It would’ve been nice to really know what the deal was in that scenario. Just too bad that another network could not pick up the show. There are so many of us out here who would keep watching for several more seasons. The writing is great - the acting is just awsome - and the show is just incredible. I watched FRIENDS for 10 seasons, and thought nothing would ever come close to captivating me - but I have to say, the OC won me over!!!! Great job - I just hope you decide to figure out a way to bring it back - BULLET and all! (LOL - it could come back with a BANG!) Would a petition with 3 or 4 million signatures change your mind???
Hey the baby was ryans she didn’t have a perternity test done sand it looked nothing like eddies okay so it would ahve been cool if it was sorted out and if we saw something happen between Ryan and Taylor at least them going to berkley together like a sot in to the next six months
It is so unusual for a person in Josh Schwartz’ position not to fight for a show that they had such success with when so many shows get cut after only 4 or 5 episodes hit the air. He must have great confidence in the new efforts and their potential.
Next, the OC. It was a great show, but no way was it going to overcome the fan base/ratings of Grey’s Anatomy. A simple change in time slot against a less powerful opponent and it would have easily continued. So why stop it? The best answer is that Josh Schwartz was done writing it. He had said all he had to say with these characters, lost the passion needed for the daily effort, and wanted new horizons.
Showing these characters in college was a significant option that was left in the dust. Why? It wouldn’t have taken place in The OC! He had them all desire far away universities. Now if they all had enrolled in UC Irvine….
So, knowing all of this the only thing that makes sense is that Josh threw in the towel, knowing that he was done and wanting to go on to the new characters and the success he desires with his new shows.
So what about the fans? The answer is simple — the producers and the networks don’t really care. Josh and his company made millions off this program, and now has contracts for millions more for the new shows he is creating. The network wants ratings to sell advertisements, and the show wasn’t delivering what it once had. So the “What have you done for me lately?” factor contributed. But the fans, as we have seen all this season with new shows given almost no chance of success, mean very little to the networks or the producers. So if you’re a fan, buy the DVD’s and enjoy the first two seasons and the good programs of this last season. Season 3 was weak in comparison, and set the stage for this result.
Me? I care about the fans who, like myself, simply look forward to watching a show they enjoy, with characters that they have come to feel a connection to and that they have a value for, and storylines that have been entertaining. But we are foolish to think that Hollywood cares about us as more than a meal ticket. I learned this long ago with the cancellation of the original Star Trek series.
Now the smart thing would be for writers to continue writing these characters into books. There is already one called “Spring Break” and another called “The Way Back” on Amazon. That’s what happened with Star Trek, and it worked well for that franchise.
So, my fellow OC fans, my heart goes out to you, as again we loyal viewers have been cheated by the ones we have entrusted to entertain us. But at this point in network television history that is the rule rather than the exception.
fox is the epitemy of stupid,
they had a show which was soooo popular then hit a decline which was still a strong support of viewers, so they can what i reckon was a great season.
after watching the final episode, i just wanted sooo much to have another season.
damn you fox
OMG i can’t believe that you have let the greatest show in history of tv end soooo quickly. i cryed for ages after it ended. In four years i have never missed an episode.
Is there anyway that the show can be brought back on a different network that can still be shown in Australia? If so i promise to keep watching and be a loyal viewer as i have always been. please i am begging you.
As stated in another reply we have all been stupid enough to think that they care about the viewers they only care as long as they need us then they throw us aside like we never exsited until we are needed to support there next million dollar show.
As far as i am concerned Fox can get stuffed.
boo
Two words to sum up the whole four years that the oc was on air, ” The Best ” Thank you Schwartz for the best show ever.
I loved 1st season and 4th was pretty good but the middle 2 just lacked the oc spirt. I agree the TJ episode is the best and so is the proposal b/c the represemt what the oc was about….Why didnt you have a 2hr finale or at least a special thing befor the fianle..o and what about purim
I can’t believe it that the O.C is over!!!!!!! california, california, californiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
again, can’t believe the show is over, the show will be tooooooooo hard to top, they could of done a lot more and i want to know what happened to Jimmy,Teresa,Trey????? Schwartz could definitly pick the show up where he left off for a 5th. He’s stupid to start a new show cause its just not gonna be the same
I can’t believe that THE O.C. is actually over FOREVER… I’m going to go into a deep deep state of depression….. I cried really hard last night, like I really thought it was the best show out there, how come gay full house has like 50 billion series, but THE O.C. has to end soo soon. Like I understand that it couldn’t go on forever, but at least a couple more series. I mean come on, if Schwartzy made it as good as it has been, what he can’t come up with stuff to keep it going….. RIGHTTTT
Sparky, you said it all. Thank you!
Sparky, are you a mind reader, because you said perfectly everything that I am thinking! It’s too soon to take the OC away. There is so much more to learn about with and through our favorite characters. Josh Schwartz, you need to bring this show back, at a different time, a different network, whatever, but just bring it back. You created something that people of every age can relate to. I am in my early 30s and there were episodes where I could care less about Rya, Taylor, Marissa, Summer or Seth, and was totally encompassed by what was going on with Julie or Kirsten and Sandy. Other times I wished the show was strictly about Ryan.
90210 was around for 10 years, and I related to that show very easily because they graduated, had prom and went to college the same year as I did (1993), but upon reflecting back, that show had no depth and was really poorly written. Though some story lines in the OC might have seemed far fetched to some, it was BRILLIANTLY written in every aspect. Please don’t quit on us now. We look forward to seeing our favorite people every week….it doesn’t matter to us if it on Monday or Friday, at 6:00 or 10:00, the point is, the OC has become a ritual for us, it’s an hour in which we forget about what’s happening in our lives and focus on the love, compassion, laughter, and life lessons that can be learned from your show.
Please come back! At least to see the kid’s through the first few years of college/adult life.
Heey!!
I just want to say that I am gonna miss that show like hell..
I think it is the best tv-show ever made..
and i hope that someday it will come back…
respect to Josh Schwartz.
Thank you for 4 great seasons…
plz gime us some more;)
I now officially hate fox lets all get revenge by not watching drive!!! Seriously that show just looks pathetic. I woke up this morning and felt like my life was over now that the show has ended, like a part of it had left. I feel like someone close to me has died. I cried last night maybe more than i should have but who can help it when a great show comes along that youve been watching since you were 10 years old and you had to turn it down really low in your bedroom and watch it secretly because your parents thought it was a soap opera and it was to complex for your age. I will miss the characters and music. I don’t want it to come back however because it would just be weird now and pointless. I will however be buying all the dvds and murchandise if i ever see any!!! GOODBYE OC I WILL ALWAYS MISS THE FICTIONAL CONFLICTS YOU PUT INTO MY HEAD EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT.
ps. WHY DOESNT FOX MAKE A MOVIE OF THE END EXCEPT STRETCHED OUT SO WE CAN REALLY SEE WHAT HAPPENS??? HMM I DONT KNOW BUT THEIRS NOTHING ELSE TO SAY BUT I WILL ALWAYS AND FOREVER BE EMMOTIONALLY SCARRED BECAUSE OF THIS!!!
There must be some way we can show the support of the show. After all with that last episode they have left an oppertunity and story for new seasons. Lets start a petition to and send it to Josh, fox or any other station that will keep our love for the OC alive
yea i will but how r we gonna do that jacob
I absolutley loved the show, we had a 2hr finale here in australia (the last 2 episodes played after one another) and the last episode was hilarious. I know they were trying to end the show in a way that made people think “wow, ryan actually found happiness”, but instead i’m thinking: “Is he still with Taylor? Does he end up taking in that kid, like sandy n Kirsten did with him?” all that stuff, it is hard 2 accept that it’s finished but the thing is, it answered our questions as well as giving us new ones.
In the episode where Teresa shows her baby she says that the baby looked like the father. The baby had blue eyes and so does Ryan. Eddie looked nothing like that baby. So at the end of the series when Ryan talks to that kid near the telephone(who had blue eyes) I took him to be Ryan’s kid. Also the first 45 minutes of the show were awful, but after that I thought it was the only way the show could end. I think we all know, even though the O.C. is the best show ever, that the best option was to end the show. It was clear to me that the actors no longer had their hearts in the show. I cried so hard and didn’t want it to end, however I realize that it was in Josh’s best interest to leave it. Keep in mind that the actors probably didn’t want to stay either. Like Adam Brody said, there are DVD’s…we will always remember his comedy!
is there anyway it would ever come back at all?
i know,is there any any way at all they cud bring back the oc???? plsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss… everything that happened in the oc felt so close to home, can u pls bring it back:’(
u guys r so so sad….. hahaha. oc’s ok, but not til u open a blog spot for it n go *sob* *sob*…..
oh fuck u bitch.
c wat i mean. everyone ere is so damn emo bout it !!!
y don u poke ur big fat nose somewhere u nosey poker..if ur not a fan of the oc, why bother visiting this site. go jerk off or somethin’.
c wat oc does to ppl. such words on a public website…. tsk..tsk..tsk….
but it’s true.u should continue the OC, no matter how much i wanna piss my gurlfren off by sending msgs against it. i stil want the season to go on
“Just try to make the best show possible and not worry about the other stuff — the numbers, the ratings, the other stuff” Stop there! That’s good. Now bring the O.C. back in a nice way, thank you! No seriously, you did a nice job ending it so well, Schwartz..
Lola, punk kid at the end Ryan’s kid, hmmm, great theory!
I have been a huge OC obsessive since it first started, but one question…
What does Seth do with his life!? Everyone else is sorted and his big life goal is to marry Summer? I am confused. Surely showing him as a successful film critic or comic designer would have been a more fitting end to what is probably the main character out of all four seasons.
Maybe Josh Schartz wanted the OC to carry on in fan fiction because there are so many loose ends and we will never know.
Plus, am I the only one that thinks Seth should have gone with Anna? She was soooooo much cooler than Summer, esp when Summer went all eco bore.
OMG! I am so sad! My friend and I had a massive tribute for the O.C. We ate bagels and sang California and bawled our eyes out. Why did you bring the O.C to an end. It could have gone on longer! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!
from the top commentsit wasssssss ryans baby!!! durrr. thats why at the VERY end of the final episode… that kid in the same spot ryan was… thhhat was suppose to be ryans baby years later. perfect i thought, just perfect.
now about the article:
the episodes josh mentioned were his favs and parts.. just classics. amazing episodes&moments
&yes johnny era went way too long but so did the lindsey era. ugh that got annoying.
i do not think that anna had a long enough run. def not. but luke&caleb yes. jimmy.. kinda killed that. too long but at the same time i think he should have stayed as a small part cause i meann hes the girls dad. he should have stuck around.
about switching around characters, i always thought ryan should date summer for a while. just for a little while .. but not too short so its pointless&stupid.
the whole thing with ryans baby for like a day. that was dumb too. they should have brought more on with that. bringing on ryans dad was good tho i thought.
I lov the O.C it is an aswomee show. Why did you have to end it:(. Hopefully somehow the show is put back on:). I love ryan he is one of the best actors on the show. I MISS THE O.C
For all the seasons, overal you did an AWSOME job!!!!
well, for one, i think the oc is the best show! it was the first show i ever really, really liked and followed every week. and i guess they ended it good enough, though i think a few more episodes could have explained everybody’s lives better, instead of squeezing it into 42 minutes. i miss the oc, but i think if they’d put marissa in a coma or something for a few episodes into the fourth season and then had her die, they’d have higher ratings for the 4th season.
some of the things in the finale were predictible, like when ryan flashbacked…but i liked that they added in old scenes into the finale. it made it more of a goodbye to the show, rather than them just ending it.
and about the baby being ryans…was that kid sitting on that wall supposed to be his even though tereasa said the baby was eddies? or just a random kid that reminded him of himself? im confused about that.
and why was mischa barton’s character marissa killed off? some people say it was because she quit, or wanted a higher pay, or just because they needed a big finale and they’d done the most with marissa they could?
okay. why are you guys making such a big deal over Theresa’s baby? Just because the kid favored Ryan?- that was just a gimmic for the audience, so we would at first think that it was Ryan’s and then find out it was eddy’s. Besides, I never liked Theresa’s character anyway. She resented the fact that Ryan was living a better life. She wanted him to return to the slums of Chino. I wouldn’t be surprised if she tried to get pregnant. Remember in The Heartbreak (that was the episode when Seth and Summer first had sex) when Theresa asked Ryan if he ever thought about coming home? DID HE EVER THINK ABOUT COMING HOME???!!! How stupid was that. After everything he had just went thru with his mom, trey, and everything with getting Kirsten to let him into the Cohen home, WHY would he want to return to Chino hell???
I love the way it ended. The best series finale ever. I mean, it could have had more elements to it, but a TRUE oc fan would not object! I especially liked the flashbacks Ryan had. Especially the one where he was going back to Chino from The Pilot and they showed a clippit of Marissa. Everything about the OC was phenomonal, even it’s ending. And I liked it when Ryan saw a kid by what seemed to be the exact same phone booth that Ryan called Sandy on. I’m glad it ended that way, because essentially, that is what the show was all about.
I think Anna and Luke should have had a cameo in the 4th season. And where was Jimmy after Marissa passed? He should have been in the 4th season, and The Christmakkuh-huh doesn’t count. I’m just so glad that Seth finally married the girl he’s loved ever since the Pilot. That, in my opinion, is the best element of the show. Who will ever know the real reason Mischa Barton left the show? But her character was a huge part of the OC. It would not have been the same without her. I’m not complaining about her going off the show(like everyone else is), I’m just appreciating the time her character invested in the show. Those were three wonderful seasons! RIP Marissa Cooper.
In Melinda Clark’s comment, I am who she is talking about( not just me alone, but you know what I mean). I was a freshman in 2003, and now I am a senior, and I can truly say that the OC was the highlight of my high school years. California here we come. Right back where we started from. Californiaaaaaaa. Here we cooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeee.
It was Eddie’s baby! The theory about that kid at the end being Ryan’s son is bullshit. The ending showed them five years later when they finished College. That kid looked 12 or thirteen, Teresa’a baby wouldn’t even be that old, probably 6 or 7.
I think it was a good ending. Ryan was a troubled kid, homeless and had nowhere to go. So when he was taken in, his life changed for the better and he got to have a good life, so it ended with him helping the boy just like the Cohens did with him. Showing everyone just needs a little help in life. Ithought that was the perfect ending.
Remember at the end when Ryan saw that Kid. And it was flashing back to when he was a street kid in the exact same spot. It was just to remind him, that’s how he started off and now look where he is now. Nothing to do with his child with teresa.
yeah that was how he started out…but, I believe that was Ryan’s kid. I think the point of the end was to take it however you want. But, time progressed because at the end, they first showed Ryan at Berkely, then they showed Julie graduating, and then Seth and Summer getting married. So when Ryan was showed at the end time progressed even further. So the kid grew up. But like I said the other day if the baby was Eddie’s why would Teresa have said the baby looked just like the father and it looked like Ryan? I think it was Ryan’s kid at the end.
Holy hell I think these some of these comments are terrible! lol.. I loved this show from beginning to end. The series finale was great.. I have always hoped that Marissa and Ryan were to end up together, but after seeing the finale, I didnt really care.. Ryan was HOT as usual and he made something of himself and after all.. the whole show was based on him. The only complaint I have is the fact that Sandy and Kirstin moved to Berkely.. I mean sure, thats where they started and they were happy there, but that isnt where the show started.. I just think that to us, the fans, Berkely didnt really mean anything to us so I couldnt really feel it. Other than that, I loved the way it ended.. Julie got an education! they should have done that a long time ago.. while Marissa was around. Sandy and Kirstin had a baby.. it took a while to wrap my head around that because now I would love to see Seth with her and Ryan hahaha.. that would have been awsome!
Then there was Seth and Summer getting married! THANKK YOU JOSH SHWARTZ!! I was afraid that because the couple are apart off set they were going to end them on-set.. and as for Summer going to George, I loved it cause in reality, that is what probably what would have happened.
So all i have to say is that i LOVED this show! I am not getting my hopes up about Schwarts’ new show but i will definately check it out.. just DUDE.. dont try to make it like the O.C.!! HHAHA.. The best part of the finale was the very last image of Ryan!! so hot and not to add… a unforgettable!! I LOVE everyone that had anything to do with the O.C!! .. especially Ben!!
if you were a true fan you probably would want the Cohens to end up at Berkely. Due to the fact that they always wanted to move back. Thoroughout the entire series they always talked about it. I thought it was sweet!
i loved this season and the finale was great! Josh Swartz did such a good job on the whhhooole show! i loved every minute of it! the show was just amazingg!! and anyone who thinks otherwise then jsut keep your meen comments to yourself and why are u on the oc website if you dont like the show???? so just let us like and talk about the great show and u can go talk about a show that you like!! cuz the oc rocks!
Well is there anyway now that the oc could possibly get picked up and get continued like by the cw?
it does suck that it gone. but if it was on the CW it would not be in HD so he did the right thing
The OC truly was a great show. Though all good things do come to and end. There is no reason to blame Josh for this. After Misha Barton left the show the numbers dropped signifigantly and there were alot less viewers. This infact showing that a company could make more money and benefit from another tv show. Thus the OC was canceled. In a good way though atleast there was closure and the last episode was very good in showing that which would happen in the next 4 seasons. In end it was a great show that I started watching two years ago in Iraq and now I get to finish it here so it seems right.
Im thinking the kid in the end is ryan’s child,. it maybe at least a many years alredy. it wud be ironic and be a full circle to the end of a great show. another theory- julies son will be boyfriend to kirsten’s girl! how cool is that hahaha! oh and another thing thanks for all the chracters josh and whoever helped him developed them from teresa to luke to the waitress in alberqueque (howeveru spell it) to anna, sadie to oliver! so many good characters. look forward to the reruns. thank u oc
I basically think that it was meant to be an open ending. As in you can interpret it however you want. As somone said before it cant be Theresa’s kid because the kid would have been 7-8 yrs old whereas the kid near the phone booth was 12 or 13.I think that Ryan was just looking at a troubled kid near the phone booth and it reminded him of how it all strted. But one thing i know is that Theresa s kid was definetly Ryan’s. Because in this episode in the 2nd season Ryan goes to Chino and he bumps into Theresa with the grocery bag. And then when she walks into her house her mother is holding the baby and she says i just met ryan and the mother says he looks so much like his father. Its definetly not Eddie’s. It is just debatable whether tht kid Ryan sees in the season finale is Theresas or not. I think Josh meant to confuse us so that we would spend hours debating on who the kid is!! Good ending. LEaves us with a lot to talk about.
ahh i cant buhhlieve da oc is ova..as in it was da best show eva rememba dose nites in skool i wud look 4ward 2 d oc.lol.ahh good times..but rily pls dont end d oc…:(
california here we come!!!!
i’m from south africa. tonite the summer prenancy test episode was braodcasted. i cant believe the o.c is over! i miss marissa though.
what i think should happen is that ryan and seth or ryan and taylor should do a spin off!!! that would be great!!
NOTICE TO ALL OC FANS:
Okay, the kid at the phonebooth at the end of the series finale is NOT Ryan’s kid. The whole thing with Theresa’s kid not looking hispanic and her mother saying, “he’s looking more like his father everyday” was just a gimmic to get the viewers to believe that it was his kid to raise our suspicions and keep viewers interested in the show.
Besides, at the end of the third season, when Theresa admits that she had gotten a paternity test with Eddie and that it WAS positive, she also states that she had a successful career, a nanny, and enjoyed spending time with her son. This kid by the phonebooth obviously came from the same background as Ryan had in the past. Theresa’s son would not have been in that predicament. You people (the ppl who believe that the boy was ryan’s son) don’t think straight. YOu think you know ssoooo much about the OC but you don’t. The show ended phenomenally: It ended just as it began. Because if you acclaimed OC fans would just reminisce, you would recall that the show was about Ryan’s getting away from his disadvantaged life and being given a chance by the Cohen’s from Newport, not his sleeping with promiscuous women who resented his success.
I believed the show ending as best as it could have. Every character seemed to have done very well for themselves. What I’m wondering is what happened with Taylor and Ryan’s relationship in the end? Oh do I miss Marissa!! She was a big part of the show, although having her leave did seem to work out in some way for the show, except having the ratings drop. I wonder if she is working on anything presently… movies? My favourite Seasons were Season 1 and 4. Well.. all in all I’d just like to say this is such a bummer the show is over but when the Season 4 DVD comes out I’m getting it and at least we have that to look forward to. This show ending is almost as bad as when ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ show ended, after 7 years mind you. I miss that show too. I know it’s from the WB but I’m just saying. I hope to see something similar in the making… or have a season 5 with everyone together, going back to when the boys were in college, Summer in G.E.O.R.G.E… Taylor and Ryan finding out where they stand and moving forward with their relationship? ( That’d be nice to see).. Kirsten and Sandy settling into the new home, and Ryan.. you see him going to his car and noticing a little boy by a phone booth looking sad and Ryan offers to help him. He looked just like how he did when he was having troubles.
Well.. I just want to say Thank-you
The OC was just a dream, you know, when you’re watching it, everything in your life is apart, all troubles, during 42 minutes, you forget all misery in your life and you’re happy because you feel like one of the OC’s character. I think Josh Schwartz is such an amazing man, especially an amazing writer, to me he is the best cause this show made me laugh, cry, feel good, bad, and made me think about life’s goal. I’m almost crying writing that, because it was my dream that I could watch each thursday, and now it’s over. To me and I think to every true fan, it will be never over, it’ll stay alive forever in our hearts, because this was not a show, it was a dream, something which was perfect even with all troubles the characters went through. Like everyone here I think that we could have a 5th season, but I think it ends good and so it’ll stay perfect in our minds. Thank you for all this dream because without you, watchers, it’d have never existed. So I guess I’m over now, a tear drops on my hands while I’m writting these last words. Thx also for the music, awesome. It made my dream even more wonderful. Cheers everyone
Alain.
Kyalz … do you even know how long it takes to become an aritecht like ryan was? not just 5 yrs
ps everyone! its been almost 2 weeks since the last new oc and i have to say that i miss it! im so glad to have seasons 1-3 on DVD. i love just travelign back to those days when the OC was at its peak. i especially love the first episodes of the series b/c i liked how marissa was w/ luke but liked ryan and they had to sort of sneak around (like when ryan hid out at the model home). i also LOVE!!!! adam brodys comedy. i hope he does that in every role he plays…maybe not every one. But when the show started up, most times, in the cohen kitchen, i liked to escape my problems and go into theirs. it was so addicting…. nobody was allowed to speak when the oc was on. most my family laughed at me b/c if even a little something reminded me of the oc… i would go into how it related ot it,and sometimes quoted it. it was a hot topic on Fri. morning. plus, Are YOu Smarter Than A 5th Greader(has OC time slot now) is funny… but definetly doesnt compare to the oC!! it wont match ratings of the oc
Fox, how dare you cut a show that was just getting great again? The first and second seasons were amazing, then the third season was a little slower, but it still had millions and millions of viewers. The fourth season was fantastic again, but you put it up against Greys Anatomy, which was just getting started so it was a new craze. If you would’ve made it at 8pm instead of 9 or something a bit different, the show would’ve been a bigger hit this season. The script was written really well and I enjoyed it as much as I did the first seasons. You should’ve let the CW buy the show or continued it next year… bad decision and i will forever be pissed that all the characters are out of work… I hope they all find a new and successful career in entertainment. Damn you!
ok…..so..ITS OBVIOUS that Theresa’s son is ryans..why r u peoople so dumb. the baby looks exactaly like ryan and nothing like eddie. eddie is hispanic and has dark hair and so does theresa. ryan on the other hand has light hair and blue eyes. where did the kid get his light hair and blue eyes if ryan wasent the father. its so obvious that theresa relizes that ryan is living a better life now and dosent want his and her baby to interfere with that because she wants ryan to be happy. so she lies. so that ryan can live a good life. Dumb people man, whoever continues to think that baby was eddies your the stupidest people ive ever met. im so mad a josh for not extending that storyline. god. oh ya and at the end of the last episode, that kid is not ryans (even though i thought it was too) because ryans baby would have been like 7 or eight and that kid was 12-14 years old.
OK????
goodness

i just started renting the dvd’s and now waiting on season 4 to come out but now im deppressed because after that its done. it would be cool if it stayed on the air like one tree hill. rachel bilson is awsome.
OMG!!!!!!! No more o.c prpa gutted! The best show on tele. I fink da best episode is wen dey go 2 TJ (out control)n wen alex comes to o.c bt cn’t believe marissa died! So sad she wz da bst character. Bt it ended wit a happy ending so all’s well dat ends well bt dn’t knw wt im gunna do nw!!!!
I was one of the retarded ones that was too sad about Marissa to get attatched to Season 4. I know it’s sad, but realistically, it would have been better with her. People don’t adapt to change well. Especially on TV series. I’m devastated that the greatest show ever is over. Raise her from the dead and make a movie…
Waaaaaahhhh.
Season1 and 2 were superb with good acting but in season 3 and 4 all the actors had lost the spirit, Seth and Summer looked like they did not care
Can anyone tell me what the name of the song is in Season 3,epiosode the “Pot Stirrer” and Sandy is in his office and the music starts…please e-mail me at dexter_wilkie@hotmail.com

I think the creators should have looked at the larger picture, just because the viewers ratings were down in the USA didn’t mean to say they were down everywhere in the world, every show has a temporary blip. I live in the UK and the O.C was massive over here, prime time slot and repeated on different channels right after it was on. The O.C had its effect on the world, and at times it was very emototionally involving and it will be missed by many including myself, unless they bring it back for more (hint hint).
Killing off Marissa was also a massive mistake and i think the creators took the easy way out by killing her off instead of experimenting the ways that both Ryan and Marissa got on with their lives, moving on with different people but also trying to keep in contact living so far away.
I also believe that if they had not killed off Mischa the O.C would have reached at least 5 seasons and possibly more.
I have not yet seen the 4th season and i am only just finishing off the 3rd but no along the lines of what happens through reading it and comments above.
If it is to stay at 4 seasons and has completley ended it will still remanin one of the greatest T.V programmes that has been.
But there is still plenty of writing to be done for this programme.
Dear Mr Schwartz
Firstly let me start by saying that you are an idiot for ending the show and as usual the corporate muppets had to have there say stick there noses in where frankly every decision they make, well 90% are wrong and end the show - When yes the ratings were down in the US but sure as hell were not down in Europe!
Im a guy, not really into shows to be honest but i have to say you really hit the nail right when the OC was created it spoke to teenagers and even adults all over the world alike, and i have to say as sad as it sounds tuesdays just arent the same anymore. For me anyway you guys have ruined tv for me because i will never let myself get into another show so much again and then have it taken off after 4 seasons i really really wish i hadnt bothered watching it!
Secondly please please dont try create a spin off to the OC it will never ever match the quality, humour or charictoristics of the OC, it will suck and you will fail miserably - Either bring back the OC or move on to somthing new.
Lastly the last season, number 4 i think was one of the best it had more humour like, life is dramtic enough and shows like the oc let you forget about them, which was good.
Again, you and fox have really let yourselves down on this one and i hope you all realise the mistake you have made.
Hi Schwarts!
I agree with Mario. But not about everything. I’d love to se a spin off or to see the O.C continues. To cancel the O.C - THAT WAS WRONG!
The O.C is the best.
Man, close the curtain while you’re still on top. Just like seinfeld, it all makes sense. I personally wouldn’t want a show as good as The OC end up like the bold and the beautiful, and go on and on and on.
The OC was great, and now it’s over. Let’s find another series to watch. That’s life, get over it.
you guys are idiots rewatch season 3 if you dont know whos baby it is lay of josh schwartz made an amazing show that took off really well and ended perfectly the oc had to end their ratings went down and it was dying away i hope you didnt except to be buried in your grave while watching season 105 you think the cast wants to go on for a million more seasons if they didnt end it now then when it was time for it to end and you guys need to get over it.
beisdes now the cast can go on to bigger and better things which means more things for us to watch like their movies examples junebug featuring ben mckenzie(ryan atwood), the last kiss featuring rachel bilson (summer roberst), and in the land of women featuring infamous adam brody aka (seth cohen) so go to ur lcoal blockbuster and check out bigger things oc is over get over it.
j

Great Solution
I think they should bring back the OC. Its so much better then the Laguna Beach. That show is nothin but drama who needs more drama in their life. The OC was real. Real stuff like that happens everyday. They need to bring it BACK .
Please Bring Back The OC!!! It Is The Best Thing Thats Eva Happened!!! Please!!! Its My Life!!!
The scene at the end of the Pilot where Ryan sees Marissa through the car window with the sunlight behind her head while Joseph Arthur’s Honey and the Moon is playing is one of the most beautifully shot scenes ever! Watch it..It will give you shivers
Why can’t we have “The OC: The college years” ? or whatever? The oc is the BEST show EVER!!! And Marissa should come back…after everything she went through it would have been nice for her to have a happy ending (with Ryan lol)
like i posted on the cast comments they could bring it back if they wanted to but we the tv watchers are the number 1 reason that station is on the air but if we want the oc to come bak in some sort of way we got to stand up and fight to get it back Mweo_@hotmail.com
